When we were discussing the pros and cons of a fifth wheel vs a motor home, it came down to, “what do we drive around town when we want to go somewhere?”

At the Sheriff’s Office I drove 3/4 ton four wheel drive trucks with service bodies on them. The service bodies carried all of our crime scene supplies. The trucks were big, and sometimes parking them was difficult at best.

One I retired from the Sheriff’s Office, I took a job at Rough Acres Ranch. Rough Acres provided me with a 2007 four wheel drive Dodge Ram 2500 Quad Cab. the truck is a great truck, but it ain’t the most mobile thing you’ve ever driven!

The thought of trying to maneuver either of those vehicles in downtown traffic was a major reason we went with a motor home.

So, once that decision was made, what do we tow?

We originally wanted to tow Lanette’s 2006 Ford Mustang Convertible. Unfortunately, the Mustang could not be towed with a tow dolly, or flat towed without modifying the driveline. Sorry, Nette, the Mustang has to go.

I had a 2011 Scion xB wagon. great car! The problem is that it can’t be flat-towed, or towed with all four tires on the ground. No problem, we will just buy a tow dolly. End of problem.

Wrong!

The Scion was too low for the tow dolly, so I had to relieve the inner fenders and splash guards to all the car to roll up the ramp. Mounting the tire mounting straps was a pain that required laying on your back and more than a few curse words. After two trips I told Lanette that this just wasn’t going to work. In addition to being a pain, once you got to your campsite you had to stow it. No thanks.

So we started looking for a car to flat-tow. Flat-towing means towing with all four wheels on the ground. Lo and behold. one of my favorite cars was made for towing! We had owned a 2008 Ford Edge SEL that I ended up selling to my son. From the factory, Ford approves flat-towing the Edge. So, Edge shopping we went!

We found another 2008 Edge (this one was red just like my other one). The only thing they don’t come with is a way to attach them to a tow bar. We liked the Roadmaster system, so I purchased a Roadmaster 4408-1 baseplate and towing system.

The Edge flat-tows flawlessly! No more tow dolly, and the setup is easy.

Unfortunately, our 2008 Edge ran its course, so we replaced it with a 2014 Edge SEL AWD.
