There is no way I would ever want to use a tow dolly ever again! See “All Things Toad” for my intense feelings on tow dollies.
So if I’m not going to use a tow dolly, and I hope I never, ever have to, I had to have a car I could flat-tow, or tow with all four wheels on the ground.
The Ford Edge (with V6 only) comes from the factory ready to be flat-towed with no modifications. Well, almost no modifications.
To flat-tow any car you need to install a baseplate. In our case, a Ford Edge requires a Roadmaster 4408-1 baseplate . Installation is fairly simple. It is made to connect to our Roadmaster Falcon 2 tow bar.
The factory Edge grille. The fascia has been removed. There are a lot of connectors and bolts, but it is fairly easy. You can see the inner bumper core. The inner bumper core has been removed. All ready to bolt in the new baseplate. The baseplate has been installed. As you can see, it replaces the inner bumper core. The lower fascia has been trimmed away. I used a grinder wheel to trim the plastic. A little tip from your Uncle Jer: Do NOT touch the hot plastic you have trimmed away! The receivers and cross bar have been installed. This is our Roadmaster Falcon tow bar. It stows away on our RV, and is the easiest tow bar I have ever used. I can hook up the car with no help or spotter. Here is the final setup. Not pictured are the cables and connections.
