National Monument to Our Forefathers, Plymouth MA, August 2023
This is a monument to those that came over on the Mayflower to commemorate their accomplishment in establishing the Plimoth (that’s how they spelled it then) colony and coming here for religious freedom, and to note what they stood for. It was built in 1889. It’s 81 feet high.
It’s somewhat difficult to read in the photo believe, a quote from the man who brought them over on the Mayflower, and founder of Plymouth Colony, William Bradford. He wrote a book about the founding of the colony and this quote is from that book.
“Thus out of small beginnings greater things have been produced by His hand that made all things of nothing, and gives being to all things that are; and, as one small candle may light a thousand, so the light here kindled hath shone unto many, yea in some sort to our whole nation; let the glorious name of Jehovah have all the praise!” (Of Plymouth Plantation,p. 236)
I found it interesting that when I went to search for the quote online, I did not see the last line in any of the ones I found online. “let the glorious name of Jehovah have all the praise!”
But I kept searching to find for sure what he said, and finally found it and the page of his book it’s on. He did say it, and it is noted on this monument erected in 1889. Why would they leave that line out of the quote?! Our nation surely has fallen.
