New York City Food
Bagels:
Bagels are a big deal in NYC. The way they prepare them is the old fashioned way. A New York–style bagel is always boiled in water that has had barley malt added, which gives a bagel its signature taste, texture, and leathery skin. I can really tell the difference!
Ess-a-Bagel:
Ess-a-Bagel was rated high for Bagels in NYC. They were very good. I got a toasted onion bagel with scallion cream cheese.
Zucker’s Bagels click for photos and info. Also rated high for bagels in NYC. Also very good.
Black and white cookies:
Black and White cookies are popular in NYC. They are a soft vanilla cookie with half vanilla and half chocolate frosting on top. I got mine at Ess-a-Bagel. Very yummy. And I also got a black and white shake at Shake Shack.
China Town:
Mei Lai Wah Wanton Noodles; click for more info and pictures.
Cupcakes and banana pudding!:
Magnolia Bakery:
Magnolia Bakery rated high for their baked goods and their red velvet cupcakes and banana pudding is famous. So delicious! Last time I visited NYC a few years ago, I had the red velvet. This time I got the banana pudding and a German chocolate cupcake. Both were amazing. But oh my gosh, that banana pudding!!! I saved some for Jerry for when he picked me up the next day and he agreed.
Indian cuisine:
Spice Mantra
I forgot to get pictures of my Chicken Tikka Masala! This was my first time eating curry. I loved it! I told the waiter I was a beginner but told him that I like spicy foods. Still he told me I should go with mild spicy, so I did, just in case their spicy was too spicy for me. Nope! Next time I’d go medium.
We also had garlic naan and an okra dish that I can’t remember the name of.
Japanese Curry:
Go! Go! Curry:
This was my first time having Japanese Curry, so now, after not having ever had curry before, I had had two kinds (Indian and Japanese). I loved both and it was cool to see the difference between the two. I had Chicken Katsu Curry. And we also got some fried gyoza. Very good.
Jewish Deli
2nd Avenue Deli:
Very good! I had matzo ball soup and a pastrami sandwich. Their mustard is sooo good. But my son, Critter, and I had eaten at Katz Delicatessen a few years ago when we visited NYC and we were both pretty sure we remembered Katz was better. A couple of days after I left NYC, Critter went to Katz and verified what we had thought. Katz is better.
